Adventures with Avocado

Since I discovered Oh She Glows Avocado pasta sauce recently, I haven't been able to stop making it.

As I'm not really a pasta fan, it's become more of an everything sauce. I've even done horrifying things, like use it on wild venison.

The vege is the New Zealand yam. It's a tasty little item with a unique taste - sweeter than a sweet potato and a little bit tangy.

Mostly, I've been mixing the avocado creation into various winter salads. Here is last night's vision.

After that I added some protein, but the pic didn't work out.

Are you an avocado fan? I'm loving them at the moment as they are fully in season. My favourite is the Hass avocado. Actually it's the only type of avocado that I do like. For some reason, I find the Bacon or Reed varieties cmopletely gag-worthy. They taste really different (to me).

Do you have any favourite recipes that use avocado? If so, please link it up in the comments. :D

    1. I have made that one! I agree, it's a winner.

  2. Agree on the Hass being better. I love to make chunky salsa (you'd have to find a substitute for the tomatoes, capsicums and/or chillies I use) or good old guacamole pretty much goes with everything. I need to branch out and experiment more.

BTW, I accidentally deleted your comment from my blog yesterday. Stupid phones and their teeny tiny links....

    1. I think anyone would like that sauce - you should try it. You might become a convert! I don't really like avocado on its own, it has to be in a recipe.

  4. I love Hass avos.... Shepherd are great too - lots are grown locally here so I manage to get amazing organic ones super cheap. Woot woot. Misty is an avocado beat - he will eat a whole one a day!

    mmmmm NZ yam, miss it!

    1. That's why I only really buy them at the height of the season. At other times they can get as high as $4 for a single organic avo. When I was a raw foodist, I ate them like apples - one of the few things that would tame my constant, raving hunger - raw foodism didn't really work out for me.

    2. Oh do tell more about the raw food thing - I'm curious about why you tried it and why it didn't work....maybe a blog about it?

    3. I think the main thing was that I did it for the wrong reasons. Not because I wanted to, but because I felt it was the way you *had* to live if you wanted to be really healthy, in tune with life, spiritually aware, yada, yada. It was all tied up with the friends I had at the time (everyone was trying to be raw vegan). Consequently I spent most of the time fantasising about things I couldn't eat and also was just plain hungry nearly all the time. In retrospect, I was definitely *doing it wrong*, probably going into B12 and iron deficiency, messing my blood sugar up with heaps of juice, and having a miserable time trying to be the most raw person on earth. But, yes, maybe there is a blog post in it!

  5. Oh YUM. Avos are just the best. Avocado mashed with feta or goats cheese, and plenty of black pepper is so good.

    1. Mmmm.. yes, feta and avo is an awesome combination. I might add some to the next batch of sauce, just to further insult Angela's vegan recipe. :D Sometimes I wonder what vegan bloggers think about all the unveganising of their recipes I do. I try to balance it with veganising other ones. I guess I just never follow recipes? I'm a rebel?
