Controversial (?)

This is the cover of the May/June Organic NZ magazine.

It's causing a little flurry of social commentary, mostly revolving around the use of a 'sexualised' image on what is, essentially, a soil and health magazine.
I've written to the editor giving my own opinion. However, I'm pretty sure that by the time the September/October edition hits the shelves it will all be forgotten, so I'd might as well let my feelings out on Fit to Blog as well.
Summary: I think this image is awesome. She looks healthy, she is wearing the correct clothes for a bit of DIY in stinking hot weather (bikini and work boots, why not?) and she is owning that powertool, or whatever it is she is operating.
What do you think?
Controversial, sex, sexualised image

  1. Sexualised image??? Bahaha! She's wearing GUMBOOTS. Not exactly sexy. Unless that's some kind of weird Kiwi fetish I'm unaware of....

Now if she was posed facing the camera, boobs everywhere, sultry eyes, pouty lips and power tool held in a suggestive position, maybe...

People need to get over themselves. It's hardly the same as naked women plastered over the backs of buses selling men's shoes or whiskey or whatever.

    1. I know. It's not exactly a thong and stripper heels either! Would anyone have even peeped if it had been a half-naked man? Would be interesting to see if their sales peaked with this cover. It's certainly an improvement on cabbages and grass-grubs.

  2. Sexualised? I don't think so... Odd? I think yes... (seriously, I just think the photo is 'strange', nothing more!) I'm not entirely sure what form of DIY she's doing but that would not be my choice of outfit - apart from the gumboots. It's just an 'eh' thing for me, and I'm someone who often gets told that I'm hypersensitive.

    1. She's building a sleepout, apparently. I've done this kind of thing (working in front of a window, doing something manual) and can absolutely understand wanting to wear as little as possible, just because of the heat. I was a bit 'eh' as well, but just because the image seemed so very normal to me. Maybe it's a country girl thing. Thanks for commenting, when you gonna update that blog of YOURS huh?

  3. LOVE it! Is that a beer I see? Even better! Women can still dress like women and do what may be traditionally considered "man's work." You should see some of the stuff I bake in! (Frilly aprons to nikes and everything in between.) Why is this any different?

    1. I would do that too... if I didn't think I'd scare the neighbours (we have them close on three sides)

  5. I am a reader of that mag too and was totes UNsurprised by the backlash. It was funny the woman that said this was the only issue her hasband had ever opened! (from the letters page of current issue). The real issue is that soil and health have an older readership of conservatives, I think.
PS. If I had a bod like that, I would do everything naked anyway.
