For those new to the blog, Foodie Friday is a tradition around here.
It's my version of what some might call a 'cheat' day, but we don't use that word when talking about food :D
This week's indulgence was deferred to Saturday, which happened to be Cinco de Mayo*.
As there weren't any really fabulous pics (low light), I decided to spice them up with some Salsa.
It's my first attempt...

Here in NZ, it's popular with Salsa dancers and people that have been missing their favourite Mexican restaurant since it was trashed by an earthquake.
Imagine my excitement when I discovered that Alvarado's had reopened within 10 mins walk of my house! (envisage some squealing and jumping around and strong. strong 'when did we last go out for dinner?' hints directed at a certain person).
If I was to be picky, I'd say that the atmosphere is not what it was. The venue, which used to be a sports bar near the now abandoned stadium, does not have the same cool vibe as their old, ramshackle, squeaky floorboards, upstairs digs. However, they are now much bigger and have a dance floor. We walked there and back though streets that are pretty much deserted. Walking past the shadowy corpse of AMI stadium was a bit ooky spooky.
The food is better than ever. Quite a feat, considering it was already magnifico. I ordered the corn chips (handmade) and guacamole for a starter. So gooood. I could have stopped right there, but went on to demolish some Fajitas. As for the Margarita? Let's just say that after four of them, it is my personal opinion that your brain should be at least a little bit glowy. I think they left the tequila out.

Oh I used to LOVE Alvarados... the old place was so fun, it had a lot of character for sure. Seriously I had 1 margarita the other night, and I was plenty GLOWY.... so yeah sounds like they forgot the alcohol component (most important!)
